Are you a life insurance expert? You have to become an absolute expert in this industry. You have to ooze confidence and reliability like a good surgeon. Read about the economy, know what is going on with interest rates, which companies are better than others for critical illness. Wouldn’t it be quite useful to know that if the client’s Dad had a heart attack at aged 36, which life insurance companies are likely to underwrite this favourably? Don’t you think that the client will have had thoughts that they may also have a heart attack around this age?
This is a massive thing. There is a lot of scepticism out there by the general public about things like critical illness. You need to reassure them that it’s a great policy. Talk about the history of Critical Illness and the infamous story of the South African heart surgeon Dr Marius Bernard (the guy that introduced critical illness insurance to the world). Talk about claims history and how much this has improved over the last few years.

Life insurance can be tricky to sell at the best of times when face to face with someone, let alone trying to do it over the telephone. How is it possible to strike the same level of trust and rapport
with someone over the phone when surely everything is condensed? Isn’t there a danger of spending lots of money very quickly when buying leads?
These were the sort of questions I was asking myself a few years ago before taking the plunge and setting up a telephone based insurance brokerage that has since gone on to turn over millions of
pounds.
According to research done by Aviva earlier this year, over half (57%) of IFAs will target protection sales as a source of new revenue post Retail Distribution Review (RDR).
The insurer’s latest quarterly Hot Issues Tracker also revealed around 28% of IFAs are also considering the general insurance sector.
Now these figures should not be surprising, as if IFAs do nothing other than start charging fees to their clients then they are likely to see a dramatic drop in income.
